Homework: Handling hiccups on the race course
1️⃣ How would you handle someone drifting into your lane during a race? 2️⃣ What would you do if your dragon head falls off before the race vs during the race? 3️⃣ Imagine you have right of way on a 2K turn but the boat next to you refuses to give way. What would you do? #level2

@Liisa Reimann I’m never sure of anything during a race so I’ll give it a try ( I have a big voice), and it has worked. Other times it hasn’t so I make a judgement call about what to do. Usually a long pressure reach call or owner to get lane placement ahead of the intruder. Slow the boat call if they are in front of us to prevent a crash. Safety first-protest later.

Owner should read “power”
Level 2 Support Calls
Hello! Those who are currently going through the Level 2 course. What night of the week works best for you for a call? It would be either 6 or 7 PM ET. Let us know what works via comments as well, so we can schedule a time that works the best. Paddles Up!

Hey everyone! I am Lora D from Philadelphia. I paddle with the Schuylkill Dragons and have been steering for a long time. I completed the Level 1 course in 2022 and am now taking the Level 2 course. I've been asked to steer in Taiwan this year for a Women's Sr.B/C Short boat team. I've done a number of 2K races in standard boats, but am nervous about the 2K in the short boat! Hoping this course will provide some info/pointers. Thanks

Hi Lora. I love steering the short boats. So responsive. We used them for our youth team last year. Congrats on steering in Taiwan. What a fantastic opportunity. Finally, next to Skaneateles, NY, Schuylkill is my favorite city to ditty (about).

Hello! I’m new to this group and happy to be a part of it. I’m part of Ohio’s Dragon Dream Team, an all breast cancer survivor team. I’ve been paddling for 20 years 💪🏼 and have been “hobby” steering when the team needs someone to jump in. Time to get serious on steering protocol and safely as I look to still paddle but support the team as a “Assistant Coach in-training”. I look forward to learning from the best! Fun Fact: I’m heading to France in August to race in August. Thanks for welcoming me!

Hi Dream Team. Are you steering your team in France? I’ll See you there with the Dragon Divas.
Cooling Vest
Standing on the back of the boat in extreme heat can be torture for a steerer. Has anyone ever worn a cooling vest? Do they work?

I hear you. I put a cooling towel around my neck. Throw my feet in the water if we take a rest. My dogs use cooling mats. Never heard of cooling vests.
