I'm making very little progress, but
I am not giving up! Little is better than none and even that is fun. Maybe I don't see or feel it, but the only me I can see is my shadow on a sunny day. No one skates with me, so I'm not hearing observations from other skaters. Only two things I can say: the pains I've had are slowly subsiding, and I can skate longer and without feeling as tired as I used to. I can only hope that by sticking with it, working on things I know I'm lousy at, incremental improvements are happening. They just have to be... at the moment I'm not feeling it and it's disappointing. Maybe this is that thing where when you learn something new you reach a plateau... then it picks up again after a while. Yeah... I'm going with that! Anyone else go through this? (This is where you say yes.)

@Albert Schepis oh sorry! I missed the post where you already explained about trying to find people to skate with.☹️.

@Albert Schepis Well, hey! You manifested a skate pal! 😜 And that happens to me too…I have a small skate group in St Augustine and we got lots of interest through our Instagram page but most of those people never actually show up. It’s just part of the thing… People have the best intentions but then the follow through just doesn’t happen. Fear of falling, expensive to gear up, etc etc.
What’s on your playlist?
What does everyone like to listen to while practicing?

Another Northeast Floridian checking in! Would love to make it to United Skates in Tampa some time!
small space practice on thin rug?
I was considering getting a very thin, industrial-type rug to use for small space practice in my garage. One reason is that the car drags in a lot of water and even if I mop it up, the floor is slippery. The other reason is I thought it might be easier to start with less friction when trying to learn new moves like strut walk. Anyone had any luck with doing something like this?

Something that was suggested to me for small space/slippery floor is to tighten your wheels. Gives more control.

@Marisa Sa thanks for the info— is it because it puts extra pressure on the bearings?
Skate styles
Anyone ever just sit down and write out a little bit about all the different rhythm skate styles? I did 😂 I will put some here and please join in and add things that I have missed! NY/NY - seems based in house music. Lots of pivots, trains and trios, figure 8’s, footwork on the 2,4,6 and 8 beat. Chicago- JB or James Brown. Footwork. Four corners, Big Wheel, Buckey Walk. ATL - real swaggy, ryding. Leg crossing, claps and stomps on the beat. Seems faster than the other rhythm styles except for …. Philly - Fast backwards looking over their left shoulder is their claim to fame. Cleveland - jumps! Stomping on beat (literally mesmerizing), group skating. Striding. Detroit - high kicks, intricate footwork using their toe stops, group formations. Cali - LA based. Sliding on fibers. Smooth. I like how they customize dress shoes into skates. St Louis - couple and ballroom skating. G slide DMV area - snappin. 180 degree pivots on one leg. Footwork. Like how there is someone else skating with them to support the “snap”. What’s your favorite style???

This is a great breakdown of regional styles and what particular moves define them! I love pulling from here and there — def a “freestyle” skater looking to build skills, improve fundamentals, and find a groove that fits me.
