Stunted Growth & Abortion in Afila Peas – Seeking Insight from the Community
Update 2/25/25 : New Seed resolved the issue. — Hey everyone, I’m running into a serious issue with my Afila peas, and I’m hoping someone here might have some insight. I’ve been growing these peas weekly from the same batch of seed for about seven months with near-perfect success—always close to 100% germination, healthy growth, and strong yields. But now, for the past five consecutive attempts, I’ve been experiencing a major problem, and I’m at a complete loss. The Issue: • Germination is still nearly 100%, with no visible mold or contamination. • When they go under the lights, they begin growing normally. • Around day 3 to day 5, growth becomes stunted—plants stop thriving. • By day 6 to day 7, many begin aborting, and by day 8 or 9, I’m losing anywhere from 50% to 90% of the tray. • The plants that abort show burnt tops, and they do not recover. What I’ve Checked: • No signs of mold, pests, or disease. • Same seed batch that I’ve been using successfully for months. • Watering schedule & nutrient regimen (Ocean Solution) unchanged. • Environmental conditions (light, air circulation, humidity, temperature) remain the same as for all my other microgreens, which are thriving. • No treatments or chemicals applied. What’s Confusing Me: Every other microgreen in the same space is growing perfectly. My process, environment, and inputs are unchanged, and yet these peas suddenly won’t make it past the early growth stage. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Could it be a sudden seed viability issue despite them germinating well? Could there be an unseen environmental factor affecting only this variety? Any thoughts or troubleshooting ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! Please see linked video, on Vimeo. Vid 1: https://vimeo.com/1052438489?share=copy Vid 2:

Update for anyone who may come across this with the same issue, and want to know the solution. New Seed - resolved the issue. I think the Afila Tendril pea seeds were less than 1 year old and stored properly.. so take that for what you will. Less than 1 year lifespan on that batch.

@Nancy Morales second this. Get that Arugula as tall as you can.
Best lighting
Comment with your favorite make and model light for a 48”x18” shelf. I’m currently running a combination of sun-blaster prism LED 6400k, and adjustable spectrum FEIT Electric 54 watt LED’s, 1 or 2 lights per shelf depending on variety.

@Jeffrey Hart okay and…do you have a link you want to share? Participate in the poll? Answer the question? The point of the question is to gauge the community, get feedback from many people on what they are using, etc..
Latest Sunflower Test Harvest
This is a harvest from Sunday. There are a few key takeaways. First, I need to pay more attention to my sow dates. I was thinking I sowed these sunflowers a week ago Monday or Sunday but instead it was a week ago Friday. Second, I need to pay more attention to my watering. Correct me if I am wrong but I think they sagging because I either overwatered them or the humidity is too high. I also need to like with the pea shots not black them out and see if this helps with the stems and not getting so leggy. Lastly, like I did with my indoor gardening (February - April) I need to use boxes to get the greens closer to the grow lights. As they grow I can then use different boxes or containers as I need or remove them altogether when they are close to being harvest ready. Perhaps, this to will help with the greens not getting so leggy as well. It is crazy how my greens can go from sown to harvest ready in 7-8 days instead of 10-11 days. It is also crazy the results I got in my three trials. For example with the pea shoots the seed starter and coco coir mix gave me the highest yield while the coco coir gave me the lowest. However, with these sunflowers it was the coco coir that gave me the highest yield and the seed starter that gave me the lowest. Not sure if this is normal or if there is something else I am doing or not doing that is causing this. I will have to keep testing. Next up is either radish or broccoli. Once, I have tested both of these over the next 2-3 weeks. I will decide which two of the three growing mediums are the best. Then I will have to test all four different seeds again before I can decide which growing medium will give me the best or highest yield. Any thoughts or feedback from the community here is welcomed and appreciated. Thank you so much for all your help, advice, and recommendations.

Others have said, they are very leggy. Also not enough light, so more lighting would be a benefit. And better nutrients will give you the best tasting biggest leaf.

@Josh Beard distance or intensity, cuz they are reaching :) what lighting do you use Josh?
Arugula
Growing arugula, do you hate it or love it? What seed weight do you run on a 10x20? What’s your total days 2 harvest? About how tall is your finished cut product? On a scale of 1-10 easiest to most difficult, what do you rate arugula? Thank you in advance for responding.

@Jeffrey Hart I stack everything mostly for convenience, except mustard, amaranth, basil.. I’d like to do a stack/no-stack comparison on things since day and see the effect on germination rate and speed

@Jeffrey Hart arugula has not done well for me the 6 or 7 times I’ve grown it.. I just bought different arugula seeds from Johnnys so I’ll see if maybe changing up the seed is what I need.
