Simple happiness
The world offers a lot of new toys and devices for our "enjoyment." However, all the stuff has not lead to more happiness. In fact, depression and anxiety have seen massive spikes in the last decade and we have more toys than ever. Both for yourself and for your loved ones, find space to enjoy the simple. Examples- take a walk and focus on nature; sit out on the porch and just observe your surroundings; have a pleasant conversation with a friend or loved one; play an instrument or just whistle; or just enjoy watching a loved one play, laugh or smile. I love to just sit and ponder my blessings. It changes my state and allows space for contentment. My favorite undergraduate psychology professor taught me "learn to be happy where you are or you'll never be happy." We need to see and acknowledge the simple joys. Tell us where you find beauty, peace and joy in the simple.

I love to drink chocolate milk out of fun mugs my kids have picked for me. I also love wearing shirts they got me. It helps me enjoy both the little things and the biggest things at the same time.
Inner Peace and being available to others...
When we are quiet and peaceful inside, we create space to truly listen and be present for others. Inner calm silences the noise of our own worries and distractions, allowing us to notice the needs, emotions, and experiences of those around us. Just as still water reflects clearly, a peaceful heart reflects understanding and compassion. When we nurture our own inner peace, we become a safe and steady presence where others can feel seen, heard, and valued. Anytime I have trouble listening to a family member I have some type of inner turmoil. Normally, this involves my ego or a personal wound. What helps you create inner peace and calm yourself so that you can be present and address the needs of others? Exercise, prayer, alone time, time with a friend, meditation, a gratitude practice... Let us know.

Working out, especially going for a walk helps me.
Have a "thing" with every kid
Parenting can feel like a lot of busy without much one on one time. I challenge you to create a "thing" with each of your kids. By thing, I mean have a special activity or point of connection. Over the past few years, I have been doing this with my 2 youngest (we have 4, but 2 at home). With my daughter, we do H & R's or hike and reads. We both love to read, so we will hike a trail, take some food and books and have some pretty awesome talks. With my son, we were doing Kung Fu, but we may be switching gears on that one. The point is to do something together, connect and in doing so communicate how precious they are to you. If you haven't already realized it, the parenting thing goes by fast. Let us know if you already have a "thing" or when you create one. I promise it's worth the effort.

That’s awesome! I totally agree that a “thing” with your kids is incredible. I didn’t do well for a long time. My oldest and I didn’t have a “thing” until she was in high school. She was in band and when I became a band dad everything changed for good and our connection was created and strengthened. Second daughter joined band in junior high and think partly because of her older sister example and the awesomeness she saw. My son’s “thing” is soccer and video games. Not sure playing video games together is the “best” thing but it’s something. This post really hit hard in a good way. A reminder of the awesomeness and importance of a “thing” with each kid and a revitalizing call to better action to more effectively use the limited time remaining I have my my two kids still at home. Thanks for sharing @Shayne Webber
