Professional Tip Re: Comfort Monitors
Today, I thought I would share a practical tip for speakers relating to Comfort Monitors (the monitor in front of you on the floor that shows you your slides so you don't have to turnaround and look at the big screens behind you). To be clear - comfort monitors are great. NOTHING is more unprofessional, in my mind, than having to spin around to make sure you remembered to click so the right slide is showing. And yes, I use slides. Most people are visual learns so having an image on the screen behind me that illustrates my point can be very powerful. But notice I said images. Here is the tip: DO NOT PUT WORDS on your slides UNLESS they are just one point you are trying to make. Your slides should ONLY be images or a one sentence quote. Why? Because if there is more text, you are going to end up reading the slide (THE WORST!) and almost as bad, you are going to look at the comfort monitor far more often than you should. - Glance when you change the slide. - Use the quote or image to remind you of what story or fact you are about to share. - Look back at the monitor only when you click to the next slide (if you need to). Comfort monitors are used by most of the amazing speakers we know and when used correctly, they do not take away from your impact. But if your nerves get the best of you and you keep checking? Then, you are the one taking your impact away. Food for thought...

@Sandi Boucher Such a solid, practical tip and one more speakers need to hear. Comfort monitors are a tool, not a crutch. When slides are image-driven (or a single powerful line), the monitor becomes a quick cue not a script. That’s where presence stays intact and connection stays strong. The reminder about nerves is especially real. Over-checking the monitor doesn’t calm the moment it tends to pulls you out of it. The audience can feel that shift immediately. Remember, slides should support the story, not steal the spotlight.
Doing Two Things at Once ...
This morning another practical advice post. Again, many people marvel at how much I can get done in a day or month or year and one of my secrets is that I am ALWAYS doing two things (at minimum) at once but not in the way you think. "Multitasking" was all the rage for many years. Then it was debunked as people pointed out it is impossible to focus on two things at once (the keyword there being "focus"). And I agree with both points. I DO multitask but I only focus on one thing at a time. For context, I no longer have employees (I did for years). Now, I am a solopreneur with many freelance contractors. This model totally works for me, allowing me to do three, four, ten things at once. I also work from home and live alone, with two furbabies so I am solely responsible for running my home as well. As a result, at any given time, I can be: - designing a new seminar, - while my graphic designer is creating a poster for another seminar, - while my video editor is working on my latest video - while I am doing laundry - while a shopper is picking up my groceries for me. I am working on five different things at once, by delegating, while also only focusing on one thing at a time and THAT is how I move mountains. This may work for you, this may not, and that is totally fine. Your success will be the result of YOU finding what works for you but don't stop yourself from trying new things and never argue against an idea without trying it because I know one thing for sure ... If I was still doing things the way I THOUGHT I had to do things in year one ... I wouldn't be in year 17 of my business. Keep growing, keep trying, keep learning. Because your business will never be bigger than you allow it to be. Love you! Sandi

@Sandi Boucher This is such an important distinction Sandi and you nailed it. 👏🏾 It’s not about doing everything yourself at the same time. It’s about owning the focus while systems and people handle the rest. Delegation isn’t chaos it’s strategy. What stood out most is the permission you give yourself to evolve. What worked in year one isn’t supposed to carry a year-17 business. Growth demands new models, new support, and new ways of thinking. “Your business will never be bigger than you allow it to be”. Whew! That’s the mic drop.
Don’t be like 2016 Stephanie.
Back then, I had an opportunity to work closely with someone who really resonated with me. And I didn’t take it. Not because it wasn’t aligned, but because I hadn’t yet learned how to bet on myself before the results. A few years later, that mindset shifted. I started taking chances. Saying yes sooner. Trusting myself earlier. That decision changed everything. I didn’t miss my path... I just took the longer route to believing in myself. Sharing this for anyone standing at a decision point right now: The confidence doesn’t come first. The leap does. I’m curious: Have you ever said no to something that later made you think, “I was closer to ready than I realized”?

@Stephanie Thoma This hit. 💯 So many of us don’t say yes because we aren’t aligned. We say no because we’re waiting on proof before permission. And the truth? The proof usually shows up after the leap, not before it. I’ve definitely looked back at a few moments and thought, wow… I was more ready than I gave myself credit for. The long route still teaches you but trusting yourself sooner changes the timeline. A lot of it is fear if wer're being honest. Powerful reminder for anyone standing in the pause right now.
