Lots of good ones there.
Black bears
Got a question for you black bear hunters…so I got invited to go on a black bear hunt in about two more weeks. I’ve never hunted them before and have the opportunity to hunt them with a bow. The hunt will be over bait (which is legal) and from a blind of some sort. I’m wondering if my 64” Toelke Whip drawing 48# with 660 grain arrows is adequate? I’ve been studying over black bear anatomy and skeletal structure and I’m not seeing anything that makes me think that I need anything heavier. There again, I’ve never hunted them before. I do have a takedown recurve that’s drawing 54# and the arrows I use with it are right at 700 grains. Thanks in advance for your input and advice.

Thanks, Grant! One thing that I did read is that bears have a tendency to present some weird shots sometimes because of how “round” they look and the fact that they’ll often sit down on their rump like a dog does to scratch or maybe to rest, I guess. They say it can throw off a hunter’s perception of where the vitals actually are? Have you seen or heard of that?

Largely uneventful, lol. The temps dropped into the 40s and made the bears lethargic and less likely to move. That far south, (NE N. Carolina) they never truly hibernate, I was told. However, they do “den up” in log piles, creek banks and the like, then wait for warmer days to move and feed. One of the group I was with did see a cub near a bait barrel, but it was running full tilt like it was being chased. I saw several deer (right at two dozen) and one shooter buck, but they were all on the move or out of range. I think the bears were conditioned to the hunting pressure because even with the bait sites being refreshed every couple of days, they were getting night time pics of the bears at the bait stations. I had a good time and made some new friends. I’ll definitely try it again if I’m invited. Thanks for asking.
New bow day! Damon Howatt Hunter
New Damon Howatt Hunter finally came! 💥 I will be doing a YouTube review of this bow. I’ve shot Howatts now exclusively for 40 years and I’ve even written articles on them for Traditional Bowhunter Magazine.. This is the 29th Damon Howatt Bow I’ve owned and if memory serves me right the 14th Hunter. I’ve had Hunters from 1966 Brazilian rosewood knife edges to early 90s semi customs of which I still own and shoot a 62# Hunter my dad gifted me that I took my last 🫎 moose with as well. First impressions are excellent. Shedua and Bubinga riser.. The finish and customization is evident and lives up to the Damon Howatt name and that it was handmade by one individual. 🪚 These are much less factory bows whether anyone wants to admit it or not they are individually made. They are not a line production type of bow and they’re all individually hand shaped and finished as well. 🏹 I will say that this Hunter is a throwback to the shape and design of the 60s bows that I was shooting when I was younger and I’m very impressed and looking forward to testing it out I’ll be doing a full YouTube video on it as well as some performance testing with some arrow build’s I already have set up for it. More to follow!

String Silencers
Happy Sunday folks! I am in process of setting up a new bow string. It’s a D-97 14 strand for my new bow! I’m very minimalist as a lot of folks know on that level. I prefer classic wool string silencers. Low fuss setup and maintenance. My daughter makes them for me. It’s kind of a bit of a mojo thing with all my bows. She’s made all my silencers for me since she was young. 🤞 I prefer a lower end less is more approach to to wool silencers - I Tend to go on the lighter side and the smaller side in most cases, and don’t like adding a lot of weight onto a string- especially a fast flight. 🎯 I also will tune 2 different strings both a B55 or a B50 as well as a D97 type of fast flight just to see for tunability in regards to noise and vibration tension. 🎵 If I have a D97 that might be three or four seconds faster I will choose the B50 or B55 string material if it’s quieter and is better off for bow VS speed - which is not what the traditional game is about and I would rather have a quieter bow than a noisy bow that's a little tiny bit faster. 🏹 I do like using brush buttons, simply for not only some of the string slap you can get with a recurve, but also in regards to catching brush since we do an awful lot of stalking and still hunting here in Ontario, what do you prefer to use for string silencers or do you use any at all?

I prefer wool. I have both Navajo and regular wool on my bows.

Mid-50s bowhunter, started out with compounds like many archers do. Always loved trad archery and finally bought a “couple” trad bows recently.
