Season so far?
For many it's the start of the Dragon Boat season. How's it going so far? Any good gossip? 😁

Boats are letting their final coat of anti fungal dry and go in the water next weekend.
High Fives to Cory, Nicole, Lesley + Christina!!
We recently launched the Level 2 Steering Course as a beta. Thanks so much to @Cory Graham @Nicole Herlofsky @Lesley Blyth and @Christina Potter for completing all the classroom modules, doing the homework, showing up to the calls, taking the final exam, and giving us SO much incredible feedback. They're now ready to implement their new race steering know-how and get ready for the assessment. While they're doing that, @Joann Fegley and I will be filling the holes they found in our curriculum. Like - how to practice for a 2K turn if you don't have access to a 2K course or turning corridor. How to handle washriding.. either as the boat on the wash or the one dragging another on your wash. How to handle being cut off in a race, or the shenanigans that always occur when steering inexperienced crews at charity races. The rest of you can help us improve it too - what questions do you have about race steering?

Thanks for inviting the feedback. It was a great experience getting to learn and meet other steers. Looking forward to turning in my race videos. Now about that 2K 😉

Intros. 👋In your post, tell us: - Where you're from: Cleveland, OHIO - What club / team you're with: Dragon Dream Team - What stage of your steering journey you're on - and where you're going: This is my 4th season with the team. I have completed the level 1 steering course, the Levels1 & 2 coaching courses and now I am completing the level 2 steering course. I have steered 200m, 250m, 500m and 2k. - A fun fact about you: I am bilingual. I can speak German and English fluently. - What scares you shitless about race steering or what gives you the biggest thrill. Every race is a thrill but there is always that fear that I will let the team down. - [Bonus points if you include a selfie.] I hope this selfie works.

Curious— where did you steer your first 2K?
Homework: Handling hiccups on the race course
1️⃣ How would you handle someone drifting into your lane during a race? 2️⃣ What would you do if your dragon head falls off before the race vs during the race? 3️⃣ Imagine you have right of way on a 2K turn but the boat next to you refuses to give way. What would you do?

2K right of way—- call them off and avoid a collision if need be to keep boat safe. Then lodge a protest.

@Christina Potter good for you to maintain the safety of your boat and realize staying in the center of the lane was secondary.
Homework: Race communication strategy
1️⃣ How would you approach giving commands during a race? Would you share responsibility with your drummer? What do you think would work best for you? 2️⃣ What have you observed from other steers that you would like to try or avoid?

Talk it through with drummer and then communicate race call plans with paddlers. I like using hand signals for a power and the finish and then calling it aloud together with the drummer. I've witnessed my share of crashes and capsizes so for purposes of approaching the start and for reasons of safety, the steer calls take precedence.

@Cleopatra Sorina Iliescu Yes the drummer-steer relationship influences how we call the race as well. If I’m steering a race with a veteran drummer that has paired with me many times, it is so “crisp and clean” to call the race in tandem. As steer, I lead getting the boat in positioning the boat on the line. Our team has confidence that I know what I’m doing because we’ve worked together through other races and practices about the “why” we might come to the line a certain way. A few years ago, paddlers that didn’t know me well might have questions or opinions coming up to the line and verbalize them. That rarely happens now if ever. It’s so nice to have a trusting relationship among the paddlers, drummer and steer.
