Root Causes of hemochromatosis (excess iron)
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), hemochromatosis (excess iron) isn't a single disease but a complex pattern of disharmony, often viewed as a
Spleen Deficiency (Pi Xu) leading to impaired transformation and transportation, allowing Dampness and Blood Stasis to form, causing Liver, Kidney, and Heart imbalances, with root causes involving congenital weakness, diet (rich foods, alcohol), and environmental factors, manifesting as organ-specific signs of heat, damp-heat, or blood stagnation due to iron accumulation. TCM focuses on balancing Qi, Blood, and Organ systems (Liver, Spleen, Kidney) to clear excess iron and restore function, using herbs like turmeric (curcumin) and acupuncture to address the underlying patterns, rather than directly targeting the genetic defect.
TCM sees excess iron as a manifestation of deeper imbalances, leading to various patterns:
  • Spleen Deficiency (Pi Xu): The Spleen governs transformation, so its weakness leads to poor iron metabolism and accumulation, potentially causing Dampness.
  • Liver Qi Stagnation & Blood Stasis: Iron deposits cause heat and blockages, leading to Liver dysfunction (stagnation, heat) and Blood Stasis, affecting circulation.
  • Kidney & Heart Involvement: As iron accumulates in organs, Kidney (essence/water balance) and Heart (blood/spirit) issues arise, showing symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, or skin darkening (Bronze Diabetes).
  • Damp-Heat: Iron overload can generate internal heat, creating Damp-Heat patterns, especially in the Liver and Stomach.
Root Causes in TCM:
  1. Constitutional Weakness (Congenital): Inherited predispositions or weakened ancestral energy.
  2. Dietary Factors: Overconsumption of heavy, greasy, or iron-rich foods, alcohol.
  3. Environmental Factors:Dampness, heat, or emotional stress impacting organ function.
  4. Organ Imbalance: Chronic Liver, Spleen, or Kidney issues creating a fertile ground for iron accumulation.
TCM Treatment Approach (Pattern-Based):
  • Strengthen Spleen: Tonify Spleen Qi to improve nutrient processing.
  • Clear Heat & Damp: Use herbs to resolve Damp-Heat.
  • Invigorate Blood: Break up Blood Stasis caused by iron deposits.
  • Nourish Organs: Support Liver, Kidney, and Heart function.
  • Herbal Formulas: Might include turmeric (curcumin) for iron chelation, astragalus, dang gui, or peony root.
In essence, TCM addresses the functional disruptions (Qi, Blood, Organ imbalances) caused by the genetic predisposition, aiming to restore systemic balance and clear the excess, not just the iron itself..
