Synchronizing Vagus Nerve Stimulation With Outward Breathing Boosts Effectiveness
This could be a really cool way to get extra out of your VNS devices.
Try placing and the removing your device from the Vagus Nerve in accordance with your breathing:
Inhaling, remove device. Exhaling, place device again.
If you breathe at a rate of 5x5 (5 seconds in and 5 seconds out) you can get a good tempo going.
Might only need to do for 2-3 minutes in this case.
The reason this works is because when you are taking a calm exhale, your Vagus Nerve is more active, so adding the stimulation helps boost Vagus Nerve activity even higher.
When you remove the device and you take a steady 5 second inhale, your other "Sympathetic" system is increasing in activity, taking over from the Vagus Nerve.
So this method might actually help you get quite a lot more out of some of the handheld devices you are already using.
It's worth giving a shot if you feel like trying it for yourself!
And I have had clients in the VNS Program years ago do this with Ultrasound, and they reported it had a significantly higher calming effect than the standard of just placing the device and holding it there throughout the 5 minute session.
But yeah, absolutely a cool new finding !
