The iconic group portrait of the 11th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force (AIF) taken atop the Great Pyramid of Giza (Khufu/Cheops) on Sunday, January 10, 1915, captures over 700 Western Australian soldiers assembled after a church service during their training at Mena Camp near Cairo, where they posed on one of antiquity's most monumental structures before deployment, an image later shadowed by history as many of those same men would soon take part in the Gallipoli Campaign, landing at Anzac Cove on April 25, 1915, where a significant number lost their lives in one of the First World War's most severe and defining campaigns.
