Volcanoes! 火山 - 妈妈老师 (Mum teacher) (best for upper beginners/pre-intermediate)
I’ve recently discovered this YouTube channel aimed at supporting children with learning Chinese in an immersive way. It’s great immersion for beginners + pre-intermediates and a good way to expose yourself to other Mandarin accents (they speak with a southern accent). For beginners: Listen for key words e.g. like / is / what / have / good etc. Learn some words from the list below, then listen again. For upper beginners/pre-intermediates: Listen to see how much you understand. Listen to see how many words from the list you can hear. Learn the words from the list. Listen again to see if you can understand more. Practice shadowing with some key words/phrases to practice intonation + tones. ……… This video shows a mum and her daughter creating a volcano experiment 🌋 at home and narrating the process to the audience. ………. That said, there are no subtitles to support listening and the characters are in traditional Chinese. So, I have prepared a list of key words for you with pinyin, English + simplified characters. This way you can learn some key words and enjoy some brilliant Mandarin immersion! 😊🎧📝. Leave a comment/like to let me know if you liked it and I’ll post more in the future! 妈妈 mā ma - mum 老师 lăo shī - teacher 同学 tóng xué - classmate 火山 huǒ shān - volcano 实验 shí yàn - experiment 一起 yī qǐ - together 学习 xué xí - to study 大家好 dà jiā hǎo - hi everyone 今天 jīn tiān - today 做一个实验 zuò yī gè shí yàn - do an experiment 很好玩 hěn hǎo wán - very fun 小朋友 xiǎo péng you - child / children 什么 shén me - what 是 shì - is 很特别 hěn tè bié - very special 不一样 bù yī yàng - different / not the same 有的 yǒu de - some 海 hǎi - sea 危险 wēi xiǎn - dangerous 想象力 xiǎng xiàng lì - imagination 东西 dōng xi - thing(s) 用 yòng - to use 我们的 wǒ men de - our 不放弃 bú fàng qì - not give up 一点 yī diǎn - a little (Bit) 准备 zhǔn bèi - to prepare 里面 lǐ miàn - inside 水 shuǐ - water 红色 hóng sè - red 然后 rán hòu - and then / next 非常好 fēi cháng hǎo - excellent 太小了 tài xiǎo le - too small 大 dà - big

Transition (前进乐团) is a British band from Bristol. However, they have produced many songs in Mandarin which are great for beginners as they use simpler language. Check out their songs such as 对不起我的中文不好 (sorry, my Chinese is bad) and 我爱你 (I love you). https://www.youtube.com/user/transitionofficial Give them a listen and let me know if you 喜欢 / 不喜欢!

Chinese Reading Practice 📚
Here’s a website I have used for reading practice in Chinese in the past. There are short stories, children’s stories and fables etc., so it’s a bit more interesting than reading ‘regular’ passages. You can also see the English translation and hover over the characters for their pinyin and English meaning. A great resource and a good step to take before trying to read novels or longer short stories in Mandarin! https://chinesereadingpractice.com/category/beginner/
