Is THIS The Season Of Tinnitus? 😦
I was reading an ATA article about seasonal allergies and tinnitus, and I think this is very relevant right now. 📜
One quick note before I get into it: the impact of allergy season on your tinnitus will depend a lot on how sensitive you are to allergens. So choose from the tips below based on your own level of sensitivity. 💡
A lot of people notice that their tinnitus feels worse during spring or other allergy seasons.
Because seasonal allergies are not just about sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion. They can also affect the ears and the hearing system.
The article explains that allergens like pollen can trigger histamine release and inflammation, which can lead to more mucus, more congestion, Eustachian tube dysfunction, ear fullness, ear popping, muffled hearing, and sometimes a temporary increase in tinnitus.
The allergy is not the cause of tinnitus itself. But it can definitely create the kind of ear symptoms that make tinnitus feel louder or more intrusive for a while.
If you’ve ever felt like your ears were full, blocked, popping, or muffled during allergy season, and at the same time your tinnitus seemed more noticeable, this could be part of what’s going on.
The article also points out that if fluid or pressure changes affect how sound travels through the ear, tinnitus can be perceived more strongly. And if you have pressure plus pain, that’s a good time to talk to your physician.
A few practical things from the article that stood out to me:
  • manage the allergy response as early as possible
  • if over-the-counter antihistamines are not helping, talk to a physician or allergist 💊
  • know that some medications, including NSAIDs like ibuprofen, can worsen tinnitus at certain doses for some people
  • reduce exposure when pollen is high 🌻
  • keep windows closed during heavy pollen days
  • use HEPA filtration if possible
  • wash or change clothes after being outside
  • stay hydrated 💧
  • warm steam or a hot bath may help congestion
  • and yes, sound support can help if tinnitus is flaring because of allergies
I also want to add something important from my own perspective:
Even if the allergy symptoms are not directly affecting your ears, they can still affect your tinnitus indirectly.
If you’re sneezing all day, feeling congested, dealing with itchy eyes, and just generally feeling irritated, that alone can make your nervous system more on edge. And when your system is more on alert, tinnitus can feel more intrusive too.
So in my opinion, the best approach is often a combination:
  • reduce the allergy burden as much as you can
  • support the ear and congestion side
  • use sound support if it helps
  • and also calm your system
That means things like:
  • breathing
  • grounding
  • relaxation
  • and responding to the spike in a steadier way
Because sometimes the allergy flare-up starts the problem, but the stress and monitoring keep it going longer than it needs to. 👈💡
I'm curious about you:
Do you notice your tinnitus getting worse during allergy season?
And if yes, what do you notice most?
  • ear fullness?
  • popping?
  • muffled hearing?
  • more reactivity?
  • more anxiety?
  • more trouble focusing or sleeping?
Feel free to share below. I think this is one of those topics that could really help people realize they are not imagining it. 🙏
If you need quick in-the-moment relief, use the attached tinnitus spike protocol.
You may experience some relief within minutes. 👍
Your truly,
(your tinnitus) Guy
