Let’s talk about Anal Glands 🍑

How many of you were taught to express anal glands?

I’m thankful that this was a thing of the past when I had my training but it’s still not completely uncommon for groomers to have this a part of their normal grooming routine.

There’s a lot of debate around whether it’s our job, or the job of a veterinary professional, what’s your thoughts?

Do you understand the risks of anal gland expression if you do it incorrectly?

Have you considered the emotional trauma that can occur, and how this might impact future grooming sessions going forward?

What about frequency? Do you know when is the right time to recommend anal gland expression?

According to many Vets, anal gland expression should not be routine at all, and in this great post (attached), the reasons are clearly laid out on the grooming table!
