Health literacy is not a complicated concept. At its base, health literacy is about our ability to find, understand, and use health information to make decisions about our care — being certain we have all the information before a decision is made, not after.
But this concept isn't just about you or me — it's also about health systems, health facilities, doctors, and nurses, and whether they're offering that information in a way you can actually understand. If it isn't understandable to you, it's useless.
This article explains how the death of my Dad, when I was a palliative care nurse, led me to understand the need for Health Literacy that still remains today!
We must understand so that we can participate in decision making that will lead us to better health outcomes!
