So I had an incredible experience at work last night. It was my first time closing on a Friday night. And this young gay couple came in, probably early to mid-20s. They are regulars I was told. One boy was in a wheelchair, slightly overweight, comfortably dressed with no care for style, wearing lipstick, which he did not know how to apply, eyeliner, which he did not know how to apply, mismatched earrings and brightly dyed hair, which looked like he simply had rinsed it with iodine.
But he owned that look totally and fiercely.
The other boy was completely nerdy, small, slight build, curly hair, coke-bottle glasses and buck teeth. An eager outgoing personality and when he smiled all the nitpicky bullshit vanished.
And somehow they found each other.
I helped them find what they were looking for and had a nice long conversation with them abt queer novels and movies. And I just wanted to hug them both to death! I felt Here are my people, here’s who I belong with.
When they left they said We’ll be back next week. And i said I’ll be here.
Gay community on a Friday night at a Barnes & Noble. Who knew?
