Is a diagnosis of hypermobility important?
This a very common question and deserves an answer. Hypermoblity/EDS comes in many different forms (13 types). There are also other connective tissue disorders which are genetic that can look similar to Hypermobility. Such as: marfans syndrome. Benefits of a diagnosis: 1. Helps you understand yourself more 2. Validates your experienced and struggles 3. Allows you to connect to others 4. Can help with medical procedures and emergencies 5. Gives you access to medication and accessories that support you rather than hinder you such as knee and neck braces or compression stockings 6. Just too many to write down! Negatives of a diagnosis: 1. If you aren't symptomatic it may make you feel like you can't do certain things because you've read somewhere that it's "not good for you" 2. Not everyone experiences the same limitations in their bodies 3. Ignorance is bliss, often the less aware we are we can be more confident 4. You may link certain pain patterns or symptoms to your body, even though it could just be part of normal life! It's always best to talk to your primary healthcare professional who understands Hypermobility. In the UK for example there is not enough awareness, and we are doing our best! I believe America is much better for support. Luckily with online communities and doctors also working now privately we can gain much more health and knowledge.
