“Long ago, the son of a wise king was brought before his father by the people to be judged for committing a grave crime, punishable by the loss of both eyes. The king, devastated by his son’s actions, offered the people an alternative: he would give one of his own eyes to prevent his son from losing his sight entirely, as he, being the father, also bore responsibility for his son’s crimes.”
