Have you ever noticed how rarely movies show the real health struggles that so many of our families face?
When I think about Soul Food, I can’t help but remember Big Mama. She wasn’t just the heart of the family, she was also diabetic, suffered a stroke, and eventually passed away. That moment when she burned her arm while cooking felt so real, because many of us have witnessed our loved ones quietly battling health issues while still trying to hold everything together.
I’ve always appreciated Tracy Edmonds for having the courage to bring those realities to the screen. It wasn’t just a story—it was a mirror.
So I want to ask you:
👉🏾 Can you recall a time when a movie you watched made you stop and really think about health in our communities?
👉🏾 How did it hit you?
Stories like these stay with us because they touch truth. I’d love to hear what scenes or films have stuck with you.
