These 8 keys unlocked spinning for me (and my students) 🧠🛼
If you’re struggling to spin cleanly on skates, here’s what actually gets the skaters I coach results to improve instantly:
(...a classroom guided post about spinning. Click links for more context.)
1. Weight Distribution is everything.
Understanding how much weight goes into your heel vs. your toes and what particular edge is crucial to getting good spins.
2. 🔄Pumping to create continuous speed.
If your spin dies out too fast, you can press your legs in and out to create more momentum. As you build muscle memory for the weight distribution, this momentum will also last longer.
3. Start your spins with better entries. Consistent form speeds up the learning process.
You’ve got 3 options:
▪️ The Rubber Band (See Video: Day 95 of 100 Day Skate School)
💎 Pro tip: Rotate first, then press into your toes or heels when learning toe spins.
4. “Circle Pinching” – a concept I teach at SK8SHOT Studios.
Imagine a circle on the ground with your one-foot spins, tightening your circle tighter and tighter… until you’re spinning on a dime.
5. Toe Chasing - another helpful concept, for two-foot spins
One foot is traveling forward, and the other is traveling backward, both equally at the same speed. It’s almost like one toe is chasing the other!
For one-foot spins, this turns into understanding the direction your foot travels.
Knowing whether your foot is traveling forward or backward and practicing that intentionally make things simpler
6. Your upper body MATTERS.
Strong posture, locked core, and intentional arm placement can make or break your spin.
7. Speed is your friend—but not out of control.
Try this: Spin. Spin 20% faster. Then 20% faster again. And faster again. Then slow it down to your normal speed and see how much easier it gets.
This gets you to push your limits within reason and, over time, increase your overall speed.
If you really want to accelerate your skate growth then train for it. Work out.
Train your core, adductors, calves, and tibs (shin muscles) to level up your balance and endurance.
🔥 Bonus Practice Tool: Try the Spin Pyramid Drill
1 spin left, then right → 2 spins → … → 10 spins
Then count back down to 1.
By the end, you’ll have done 200+ rotations total.
Because getting better is about iteration, not repetition. 💡
