Socks color, pants or shoes? White or not white?

Hi gents, I'm at the last mile of my purchases and I need one last piece: socks. But not generic socks (black, navy, charcoal), I need socks that play well with light colored pants (cream, beige, ivory, whiteish, etc).

I know that some people recommend to have socks matching the pants, while others to match the shoes. What's your opinion?

And also, what color would you use for light colored chino/cargo pants? Is white a big NO outside of sport and should I go with a cream/beige color socks, or are white socks acceptable in that case?
