A Vested interest
A vest, or more accurately in this case, a waistcoat, is a sleeveless garment whose primary purpose is to provide warmth which is why I grabbed one as the temps fell 50% over the past 24 hours. However, as style perpetually does where form follows function, a vest can provide quite a statement and immense versatility to an outfit. Let me start with defining terms. A waistcoat is always a buttoned garment that has no sleeves. Typically it’s a more restrictive definition of being a more formal garment than just a vest (in the UK the distinction between vest and waistcoat is even more astute). A vest can be buttoned or a pullover but the key to a Vest or Waistcoat is that each HAS NO SLEEVES. A vest’s fabric can be knitted, or not. If knitted it is a sweater-vest whether it has a button front or not. But again IT HAS NO SLEEVES. A v-neck sweater under a a coat that has sleeves or a cardigan sweater under a coat that has sleeves are NOT VESTS. They are merely sweaters. I see that error made frequently in this community. While I don’t point this out when it happens (and truthfully sometimes it’s impossible to know if the garment has sleeves in a pic), I respectfully address this as a mere point of reference to guys who might be confused about this distinction.
