We’ve had hundreds of local trolls on X since 2019, for the crime of identifying as British in a contested place.

Then a Stephen King post did 8.6 million views on X and the trolling went international.

Being a bookshop we turned to a book for help, Ben Settle’s ‘Copy Troll’.

In the book Ben’s position is trolls are raw material, not a problem to be managed. So we started turning ours into unpaid interns, making ‘quote merch’ for us. They supply the line, they supply the outrage that spreads it, we supply the checkout.

I thanked him for it publicly on X and linked to his site.

His reply was Pepe in a top hat and monocle, holding a glass of wine.

No words, no explanation.

But more than enough for me.
