Learn to Paint Twilight Flames is happening in 2 hours
Paint Brand matters because of THIS
Artists, by nature, are conservative spenders. I tremendously value this! Each brand of paint has a unique formula that consists of basically 2 or 3 things. 🌟🌟🌟. PIGMENT 🪣🪣. CARRIER 👽. FILLER Those 👽👽👽 (fillers) can sabotage your painting in 30 seconds if you don't gain the knowledge. Dull color Mud Weird Texture And you might think that it's your technique that is the problem. _______________ So here's what we do. 1. Learn how to work with what you have already. 2. Don't panic and buy new. 3. Upgrade to better quality paint BUT ONLY WHEN your existing tube is gone. FOR CANADA STUDENTS - Here is a list from Michaels.ca Winsor Newton WINTON oil paints - these are the EXACT paints I teach with. These are student paints with a good quality. You can buy one tube at a time. Gamblin 1980 - these are a GREAT option - maybe even a little higher quality than WINTON. You can go for these when you want to really start selling your work. Gamsol - for cleaning brushes DO NOT BUY -Anything that says "Water Soluble" - they will not mix or behave the same way at all! -Anything that says "substitute" - this will leave waxy residue. Guessing with paint is expensive… and frustrating 😆 This is a 1:1 session. Make your Paints Predictable HERE.
Anybody around to help me with paint advice?
I’m at Michael’s and they have a buy 3 get 1 free sale going on. My student grade paints didn’t include the black or reds that Michelle recommended and I’m eyeing the magenta but it says “water mixable oil colour” Is that okay? There’s no straight up oil paint…

Get your supplies ready. If you want personal help, book HERE. Here is what I will be teaching with. I have used these colors teaching MANY students already and they work VERY well for people who have never used oils before: ** NOTHING IS MANDATORY - feel free to substitute or improvise. Titanium White (W) Cadmium Lemon (CL) Yellow Ochre (YO) Burnt Sienna (BS) Alizarin Crimson (AC) Magenta (M) Viridian (V) French Ultramarine (FU) Ivory Black (IB) BRAND? I teach with Winsor Newton WINTON paints. They are a student grade but they really have great pigment strength and are affordable. Mixing palette (to mix paint on) Brushes 1 detail brush, 1 filbert (4 or 6), 3/8” chisel, 1/2” blending) Palette knife size 22ish 8” x 10” gesso’d (in neutral grey) painting panel (AKA Canvas) I HATE TRADITIONAL LINEN CANVAS! I paint on aluminum panels. They are Archival (they last forever) and my detailed brush strokes do not get lost in the tooth (texture) of the material. I will do a special post about this. Odorless Mineral spirits Old towel You might notice that there is no medium here (like walnut oil). I rarely use medium. If your paints are fresh, they don’t need it and they just seem to complicate drying. Or, you can affordably buy it HERE. If you have ANY questions, book a 1:1 HERE. This topic can be so long and others can learn from your questions. Brand, size, other products, this is where that goes.

A SOLUTION to Overwhelming Choices
Open the box. Press play. Start painting. When I first started in my oil painting journey, I was SUPER overwhelmed with picking supplies. TOO many options!!!! A quick look onto Dick Blick (online art super store) and you would be SERIOUSLY inundated with decisions like: ⚠️ What brushes are good for a beginner? ⚠️ Why can’t I use my other art brushes? ⚠️ What the hell size is a #4? ⚠️ What paints should I try? I didn’t want expensive stuff but I didn’t want shitty paint either. ⚠️ What would I paint ON? Canvas? Other options? And all this with the thought - 😖😖😖😖😖 WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE PAINTING WITH OIL? 😖😖😖😖😖😖 I was painting with acrylics and I liked it. But I could see that oil paints were SO much richer in depth and color and I REALLY wanted to try them. But I was also worried about things like: ❓ What about dry time? I don’t want to let my paintings dry that long! ❓ GOSH, oil paints are so much more expensive!!! ❓ I hear that blending colors is so risky! ❓ Are they toxic and STINKY? ❓ What is this fat over lean shit? My FIRST of many investments in Oil painting was about $300 and that was only the beginning! So, I was determined to make this EASIER for beginners. A SOLUTION - because the struggle was REAL! A low risk startup kit. Try it and no remorse if you hate it and want to pitch it all. So I built what I wish I had. ✅ A simple setup that has been tested. ✅ Brushes that move the paint the way they’re supposed to. ✅ A surface that doesn’t fight you (this part matters more than you think. More to come.) ✅ And most importantly — a place to start These kits include access to a step-by-step painting tutorial along inside this community so you’re not just looking at supplies wondering “What the F💣 do I do now?”. Open the box. Press play. Start painting. And if you already have supplies? There is a list of what I teach with there in the link too. This isn’t about buying stuff. It’s about finally starting.
