Progress isn't always a straight line.
Doing arpeggios and runs and etudes and scales for weeks or months on end can get old. We often think we're not getting anywhere, we're not learning new things, we're "stuck".
But doing an old standard with someone new or for someone new, we might see how we've changed and progressed.
Evolution and skill building isn't an instantaneous thing. I think, if it were, we'd likely take it for granted.
