So I got a bday present for myself (with help from my girlfriend). I’ve wanted one of these for so long. This is a custom made “Kelly-caster” made by Rick Kelly of carmine street guitars. He makes these out of reclaimed wood growth wood from historic buildings in NYC, selecting the most resonant pieces for these tone machines he calls “The Bones of Old New York”. Each one is unique in style and history. The wood for mine comes from the old speakeasy “Chumleys” at 86 Bedford (where the phrase 86’d was invented). If you’re interested there is a documentary on this legendary shop in YouTube and Tubi just called carmine street guitars about Rick and his protege, Cindy, making these insanely cool guitars. They also have an instagram showcasing what they are working on. After living in NYC for 8 years I feel so lucky to be carrying home a piece of the city in guitar form.
