Ditch soil
Living in a wet region has disadvantages and also many benefits, we tend to have a lot of drainage channels around the fields and a regular part of management is keeping them clear, sometimes they become redundant or are overlooked and when this happens its where you have true black gold, hidden in an old ditch is years of debris kept moist and covered, fed by minerals washed off the land and home to abundant biology, large and small. The soil you find at the bottom is beyond compost and a prescious find . These drainage channels are man made , but at the same time they are rich ecosystems, so harvesting from them requires a delicate touch, lift off the top layer and place it on one side of the ditch ,then the soil underneath goes to the other side to be removed. Then replace the top layer as you found it , to maintain the life within.
Use the black gold sparingly because it takes decades to make.
