Hey Circle of Care fam,
I wanted to share something that’s been quietly powerful in my family’s journey: Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10.
I started looking into it after my dad’s kidney function declined to Stage 5 (End Stage) kidney disease. Based on a book i read, we added CoQ10 to his routine— more like made it and a few other supplements his routine...and while it’s not a magic bullet, we saw real improvements in his energy and lab markers. He rarely takes any meds now, just these supplements and occasionally some lasix.
More recently, my mom’s doctor recommended it to support her memory. Too early to say definitively, but she seems a bit sharper and more alert, which is encouraging.
🔬 What is CoQ10, and how does it work?
CoQ10 is a compound that our bodies naturally produce. It plays a key role in cellular energy production—especially in organs that need a lot of energy, like the heart, brain, and kidneys. It also acts as an antioxidant, helping protect cells from damage.
💡 Potential Benefits
- May support heart health and blood pressure
- Can help with energy and fatigue, especially in older adults
- Might improve kidney function in certain cases
- Shows promise in cognitive support and neuroprotection
- Often used alongside statins to reduce muscle pain
⚠️ Risks & Considerations (I researched these myself, please do your own research)
- Generally well-tolerated, but some people report mild nausea or upset stomach
- Can interact with blood thinners and certain meds—always worth checking with a provider
- Effects can be subtle and take time to show up
🛒 How to Choose a Good CoQ10 Supplement
- Look for “ubiquinol” (the active form) if you're supporting older adults—it’s more bioavailable
- Choose brands that are third-party tested (e.g., NSF, USP, ConsumerLab)
- Avoid unnecessary fillers or additives
- Softgel formats tend to absorb better than powders or tablets
👂 Curious to hear from you all
Has anyone else used CoQ10 for a loved one—or for yourself? What did you notice? Any brands or formats you swear by? Based on dad's results, I may add it to my regimen earlier rather than later.
