LET YOURSELF BE SEEN FIRST (THE HUMAN STUFF)… THEN TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU OFFER
(MOST PEOPLE DO THIS BACKWARDS)
WHAT IF… instead of writing another promo post that does the job (promotes) but nobody actually wants to READ, you turned it into something people actually stop at, nod along to, and think “oh holy guacamole… yeah… that’s me”.
Because I keep seeing and hearing HEAPS of peeps saying things like “I don’t know what to talk about” or “I don’t really have anything to post right now” and every single time I hear that my brain goes… hmmmmmm… do you though?
Or are you just bored of what you think you’re meant to say…
Because usually what’s actually happening is people feel like they SHOULD be talking about their FEATURES, their OFFERS, their COMMUNITY UPDATES, their LINKS, their CALENDAR, their LATEST THING, and when that starts to feel forced or boring or same-same, they just… stop posting altogether.
Which is fine, (all epic stuff btw) obvs. No judgement. I’ve done that. MANY MANY TIMES.
But it is also the fastest way to sound like everyone else #gulp (blending in sucks) AND then feel a bit meh aka poop about showing up at all.
here’s the bit I really wanna land, because this is the bit so many people miss while they’re overthinking their captions.
YOU ARE ALREADY DOING THE CONTENT!!!
Like… literally already living it. You’re IN it. You’re having the conversations. You’re having the wobbles. You’re having the WOOPS. You’re doing the actual thing you say you help people with… and then you just… don’t talk about THAT bit.
And I reckon it’s because that bit feels too normal to you. Or too messy. Or not “finished” enough. Or you tell yourself “oh I’ll share this once I’ve figured it out” and then three weeks pass, you’ve moved on, and the GOLD has fully vanished. Poof. Gone. Bye Bye
So instead of asking “what should I talk about”, which honestly makes most peeps freeze even harder and stare at the screen like it’s personally attacking them, I wanna flip the question completely.
What did you ACTUALLY DO this week????
And I mean actually-actually.
Not in a fancy pants, highlighty reel, look-at-me-being-amazing way. I mean real life lifen'. In your body. In your business. In your brain. The bit that happened between the coffee and the overthinking.
Like…
If you’re a health coach, what happened with YOUR health this week. Did you wobble. Did something flare up. Did you ignore your body and then go “oh… right… noted”. Did you try something new. Did you learn something about yourself.
THAT is the STORY. HELLO HUMAN.
If you help people grow communities or businesses or content or whatever, what did you notice this week. A comment you read. A post that made you pause. A pattern you spotted. Something that confused you. Something that made you go “ohhhhhh that’s totes interesting”. A mistake you nearly made. A thing that worked better than expected.
THAT is the INSIGHT
And honestly this applies to EVERY-FRICKEN-THING…
Mindset. Money. Creativity. Confidence. Relationships. Life. DOGS. Plants. DOGS again (important AF)
A convo you had. A DM that stuck with you. A moment where you nearly gave the ef up and then didn’t. A moment where you DID slip and then laughed about it later. HELLO VERY HUMAN HUMAN.
Because people don’t just love tips. And let’s be real, we can get tips ANYWHERE now. AI. Google. YouTube. A bloke shouting on Insta
What people actually love are EXPERIENCES. They love STORIES. They love feeling like they’re inside your head for a second going “oh sh*t… same”.
And THIS is the bit that makes you stand out without trying to be clever about it.
And this is the bit I will always keep coming back to, even when I forget it myself.
You don’t need to WAIT until it’s TIDY
DO the thing. Notice the thing. Say the thing.
That’s it. That’s the whole thing.
No fancy framework needed (even though my brain totes loves one too)
STORY → BRIDGE → LESSON → then, IF it fits, share how your space connects to that story.
Not just “buy my thing”. How's about “this is why I care”?
Because yeah, we can ALL write a promo post.
Nothing wrong with them, not dissing them at all.
But NO ONE ELSE can share your story, your experience, your lens, your messy middle, your way of being in it.
So… ready to give it a BASH?
And if your brain is still doing the whole “eeekkk but what if no one reads it, what if it’s messy, what if I overshare, what if I say too much, what if what if what if” spiral…
And thats the EXACT reason why I created THE BACKROOM←🚪
It’s the SPACE where the messy middle RESIDES, the part so many people ignore or feel weird about or straight up feel ashamed by. it’s the thing BEFORE THE THING, before the action, before the clarity, before the confidence, before the “I’ve got it all figured out” moment.
This is where we wobble together, we WOOP together, we win together, messy encouraged, real ALWAYS, human HELLO, no pretending, no polishing, no fixing yourself before you’re allowed to belong.
