Trouble with Headroom
I'm working on a mix of my own production in collaboration with an artist and I find that I always run into what shall I say, 'volume creep'? Basically, my master starts at -12dbfs, then I get excited about a part of the song, work on that, bring it up a little, then I see its sitting at -6dbfs. Now I'm adding compression, fx, and some modeling on guitars and my master is sitting at -1.7dbfs in some parts, mainly -4.5 dbfs.
Any advice for dealing with this? It's like I want to hear everything and it's hard for me to turn things down when it's my own work.
What should I be before mastering? -12 dbfs?
