Producer 101- Notes Comparison Discussion?
I know some of you have already done this. I know some are on it right now. I am curious as to how/what you guys did or got to and such. I mean there is no one but ourselves checking out our work, unless we do a mentor call right? Well, we can check each others work out and then we can leave the more important things or whatever it may be for mentor calls. Though these are basics and probably as important as anything else, however trivial it may seem. Reference track analyses/eqing, do you guys build your profile with whole song, then eq by comparing the profiles? Or just parts of it here and there? Limiting to RMS -9, Did you do this over the entirety of the song, or by analyzing parts of the song? how did you go about achieving it? Some analyzers are momentary, and some build upon the value. Were you happy with the results after compression/saturation/EQ etc and then Limiting to -9RMS? Did you feel the changes were sufficient to the song mixes, or do you feel that they're just showing us some processes to ensure we understand what the tools do, to move forward? Something to get us all interacting I hope. \m/ I wasn't quite happy with the results I got, so I didn't bother saving the files even. But if you guys would like to check it or compare, I'll just redo a bit later when/if I get that chance. I redid it, not quite sure if it suffices. I struggled more this time, probably because I am not feeling too well and using different tools this time around. Personally... I don't even know what to think about it. https://drive.google.com/file/d/15SGlSUEk46TsGoM32lsLV50Zr-dJP-ef/view?usp=sharing

@Billy Cordero Thank you so much. Definitely helpful! Didn't quite like the result overall, but I did think it was more about doing the tasks than anything. Though I am sure I could do better next time. Achieving the tasks, and making it sound better using just the tools they asked us to use. 🙏

@Steve Moore I would have definitely cut out 10hz at the least, but I was following the reference in this case.😁
Mastering Final / Question
I have a feeling what I'm doing is very wrong. Looking at the Ref track - Antihero with 2 Paz Analyzers, one on Main track, one on Reference. And messing with EQ to try to match the curve correctly which is hell 🤣 I'm going to focus on listening, and using the EQ chart instead and getting as close to the Reference as possible that way. My question is, would that be a huge mistake, to just go off of the analyzer and make moves to try and match it?

:D I also wonder if did it correctly. So you're on the last one for the Mastering section there as well. I used an analyzer and let it build the reference. Then an EQ to do matching. If you're analyzing pieces. I think... Someone correct me if I am wrong here please. Make sure to compare the chorus parts to the chorus parts or similar. Also check the volume to be roughly the same for matching. I obviously wanted to start automating things 😅 but I didn't so that I could see what I get to. When I did the RMS leveling I used quite a bit of compression, limiting it to -9 RMS off the bat didn't work well for me. Let me do that one again maybe I did something wrong last time. I didn't like the end result much. Then we can compare as well?

@Raymond Lauriano Hey hey, today ended up being a long week if you know what I mean 😅 Here is what I got to. Apologies for taking so long on this. https://drive.google.com/file/d/15SGlSUEk46TsGoM32lsLV50Zr-dJP-ef/view?usp=drive_link Equalizer>Compressor>Limiter>Saturation>Limiter(True peak/Intersample peaks enabled) I used Reaper stock plugins, the saturator is Msaturator from Melda
What DAW Do Y'all Use?
I am curious to find out what DAWs are being used. More importantly, does the DAW matter more than the skill put into using it? I personally use Cakewalk.

@Raymond Lauriano Nice. I tend to make my sound design in FL mostly. Reaper for most audio work, FL lacks a lot of audio tooling. Also didn't select one😅.

@Raymond Lauriano I am going to select Reaper. I've thought about it, my DAW is actually Reaper. FLstudio I usually use rearoute to route, sometimes I just the VSTi. I basically never do audio work itself. It's more a sound design tool for me.
Music Production 101
Just completed Music Production 101 Mastering. My first attempt at Mastering Music. With the training provided it went well. I felt that it sounded better than any other attempts at Mastering. Overall, I feel I had a good success. If anyone is just starting this maybe we could compare notes and how you felt about the course. I still need to purchase a camera for my computer. Any suggestions? Also, any suggestion on a good pair of headphones? I was looking at the VSX from slate but was unsure if that is what a beginner really needs. Happy Mixing all. That is where I am headed next to study🎧.

@Steve Dunn What I read from that. Is that no matter how bad Youtube, bluetooth deteriorates the audio. If it is good, people are going to vibe to it. As audio junkies, we appreciate every little bit extra though, but probably we will end up vibing to it too.

@Garry Simmons Yeah I went for super comfort, I tested various headphones, and I ended up with OneAudio studio 50 pro rebranded as Parrot headphones. I have been happy ever since. And no they aren't flat at all. I couldn't care less about being judged by using them. Unless shown that I can do better with something else otherwise. Fact is, many people have these headphones and they are more in line with average consumer products. The fat cushions are comfortable and I haven't had headphones produce such a space as they do, I am guessing the cavity/distance from the actual headphone speakers creates the "room" feel. Also think it gives more feel to the bass. I could be wrong but that's just how I feel about them ever since I got them. https://www.oneodio.com/products/studio-pro-50-black-professional-studio-over-ear-headphones South African store: https://www.parrot.co.za/product/sku/CT3013&parrot-wired-headphones-pro
