Claude doesn't count messages. It counts tokens. Every new message makes Claude read the entire conversation again, so long chats cost more.
Here are 10 easy ways to use fewer tokens:
- Edit your prompt instead of sending follow-up messages.
- Summarize and start fresh when a chat becomes long.
- Combine requests into a single prompt.
- Use Projects for files you reuse often.
- Save preferences in Memory instead of repeating them.
- Turn off unnecessary tools for simple tasks.
- Use Haiku for lightweight work and Sonnet or Opus for complex tasks.
- Spread work across the day to benefit from the rolling 5-hour limit.
- Start a new Claude Code session when switching projects.
- Ask for shorter replies when you don't need detailed answers.
