There is NO such thing as a synonym!
I was watch a short video of someone teaching english on the internet, he was saying that there is no as a synonyms for the words we use! 🫢 He went on to explain:
look at the words "slim" and "skinny", they both mean 'not fat' but if you call a friend "slim" it is a compliment and if you call your friend "skinny" it would be an insult.
I have often thought about this when explaining words to a student, like today. i was teaching conversation and replies, one student did get stuck with it (very good to have noticed and become confused). This is what she asked; where do i put the word "please"?
"Can i have some water, please", or "Please, can i have some water"
I said for her to put down which one she thought it would be, she put it the right way. For those of you that also want to know the difference :-
"Can i have some water, please" = is the right way and that you are asking nicely.
"Please, can i have some water" = it is still a nice way but by saying "please" first means that you are begging for water.
