New year’s purification
Every year, we invite him (her)to our home. He(her)performs a purification ritual to ward off bad luck, such as natural disasters.
On the table are offerings to the deities of Hoshoku Shrine: vegetables and rice to pray for a bountiful harvest, and dried squid and grilled dried fish to bring good fortune.
This is the room where our family Buddhist altar is placed.
Do you see the small portable shrine in the upper left? Inside it, three deities are enshrined: the sun goddess, a food-related deity, and the local guardian deity.
In Japan, we live surrounded by many deities.
