Why Pricing Your Book at $2.99 Might Be Costing You Money
That "safe" $2.99 price tag might actually be your most expensive decision.
Here's how KDP royalties actually work: books priced between $2.99 and $9.99 earn 70% royalties.
Books priced below $2.99 drop to 35%.
So a book priced at $2.99 earns you $2.09.
The same book at $4.99 earns you $3.49.
That's a 67% increase in earnings per sale — with the same amount of effort.
And here's the psychology piece: a $4.99 book often looks more credible than a $2.99 book to a buyer who doesn't know you yet. Cheap can signal low quality in a crowded marketplace.
Stop pricing out of fear. Price based on value and the royalty math.
(The exception to the rule here is when you're doing your initial book launch and you're trying to push as many buyers in that book launch window. The pricing doesn't matter as much as your sales momentum.)
