“The Scriptures are layered!” - How God speaks through the Bible
I’ll never forget the day I realized that God talks to us directly through the Bible. I was reading one of the New Testament letters and all of a sudden, it was like one of the verses jumped off the page at me! You know those old 3-D glasses with the red and blue film for lenses? I’ve seen some comics that were made for 3-D and when you used the glasses it looked like the pictures popped off the page! That’s what it was like in my Bible, but instead of 3-D glasses, I had the Holy Spirit, and He was speaking to me. I ran down the hall to my dorm room, where my roommate Jordan was sitting (he was mentoring me in my faith and the scriptures at the time). I was so excited. I said, “Jordan, Jordan! The scriptures are layered!” He just nodded and said, “Yeaaah!” I did not know this before that moment. I thought the Bible was written to the audience of each book or letter and we get to learn from it by applying it to our lives. This is true… AND… as you read, the Holy Spirit will emphasize or “highlight” words, phrases, or ideas to you in a way that feels like the author wrote it to you personally, or that God is speaking directly to you through that portion of the book… because He is! This is what I mean by layered; it’s multidimensional. It is speaking to the original audience specifically AND it speaks to you specifically. Another layer is peeled back when the Holy Spirit sometimes also expands the concept in your mind so that it means more than what is written plainly. TO BE CLEAR, I do NOT MEAN that it will contradict or say something different than what is being said in the original context. I DO MEAN that it’s like the Holy Spirit gives you more context or insight into what is being said than what is plainly written, especially if you are familiar with the scriptures and He brings other verses to your mind to form that context. This is the most foundational way to begin “hearing” or discerning the voice of God speaking to and through your spirit. Drop any questions or comments you have below! We will continue posting content about learning to hear the voice of God as we go.
