Services how far is too far? Try this...
So I want to share this with you before i start talking about it to my YouTube Subscribers.
I’ve been doing a lot of testing and tracking around service areas recently, because there’s so much conflicting advice out there. Some businesses list almost the entire UK as service areas, while others only name the towns right next to them.
And to be fair, both sides have some logic behind them. These days, some businesses really can work nationally or even globally using Zoom and remote services. Also, certain industries are naturally willing to travel further because the job value makes it worthwhile.
But after analysing thousands of Google Business Profiles, here’s the pattern I consistently keep seeing…
Google still seems to heavily rely on your registered address (even if it’s hidden from the public). As far as the algorithm is concerned, that acts like the centre point or “pin” of your business.
What I’ve noticed is that once service areas stretch beyond roughly a 40-minute drive radius, profiles often start to lose focus and become diluted.
So the best approach seems to be:
  • List the main towns and areas within around 40 minutes of your base
  • Then go even more granular
This is the part most businesses miss.
Instead of only naming large towns and cities, also include nearby villages, suburbs, estates, boroughs, and smaller locations around your pin. You might think, “There’s hardly any population there,” but because very few competitors name those places, you often end up being the business Google associates with them.
And that can lead to some surprisingly easy wins.
Let me know what you do with this in the comments below.
