๐ŸŒบโค๏ธ Poinsettia Day (Dec 12): How to Choose, Care For & Keep Your Holiday Poinsettias Thriving
December 12th is National Poinsettia Day, and if youโ€™re a gardener (especially a container gardener!) this is basically a mini-holiday just for you. Poinsettias are more than pretty December dรฉcor. Theyโ€™re living plants that, with the right care, can stay vibrant all season longโ€ฆ and yes, you can even keep them alive into the new year. Letโ€™s celebrate this festive bloom with a PGS-style guide to choosing, caring for, and absolutely loving your poinsettias this December. Poinsettia Day honors Joel Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico, who introduced the plant here in the 1800s. In Mexico, poinsettias are called โ€œLa Flor de la Nochebuenaโ€ โ€” the Flower of the Holy Night They grow as full-on shrubs and even small trees. Container gardeners donโ€™t get poinsettia trees (sigh)โ€ฆ But we do get the most festive houseplants of the year. What To Do If Your Amaryllis Starts Leaning
Itโ€™s December, which means amaryllis season is officially in full swing and nothing steals the holiday spotlight quite like those huge, dramatic blooms. But if your amaryllis is starting to lean like itโ€™s whispering secrets to the poinsettia beside itโ€ฆ donโ€™t panic. A leaning amaryllis is super common, totally fixable, and honestly kind of part of its charm. Hereโ€™s exactly what causes the lean โ€” and what you can do to help your amaryllis stand tall again. Leaning usually happens because the flower stalk grows toward light. On dark December days, amaryllis often stretch and bend toward a single window. โœ” ๐Œ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž ๐ข๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐š ๐›๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ญ Bright, indirect light is ideal โ€” east or south-facing windows are great. Give it a quarter turn each day. This helps balance growth and keeps the stalk straight. If you skip rotationโ€ฆ youโ€™ll get a very dramatic S-curve. โœ” ๐ˆ๐Ÿ ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ž๐š๐ค Use a small LED grow light placed 8โ€“12 inches above the plant. ๐Ÿ’ง ๐Ÿ. ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐‚๐จ๐ซ๐ซ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ฅ๐ฒ (๐“๐จ๐จ ๐Œ๐ฎ๐œ๐ก ๐‚๐š๐ง ๐‚๐š๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž ๐–๐จ๐›๐›๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ ) Amaryllis donโ€™t like soggy soil. Overwatering = weak stems + floppy growth. ๐’๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ค ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ž: * Water when the top ๐Ÿ-๐Ÿ inches of soil are dry. * Let excess drip out completely, but never leave it sitting in water. * If your bulb feels soft or mushy, itโ€™s been overwatered and needs time to dry. Amaryllis actually bloom better when theyโ€™re in a tight pot. A pot 1โ€“2 inches wider than the bulb is PERFECT. If the pot is too big, the bulb puts energy into roots instead of stability causing a weak, leaning stalk. If your pot is oversized you can add decorative stones or moss around the bulb to give extra support. When the stalk gets heavy with buds, even healthy amaryllis can lean. Use: * A bamboo stake * A thin wooden dowel * A decorative metal plant support Insert it carefully into the soil away from the bulb, then use twine or a soft tie to secure the stem loosely.

๐ŸŒตโœจ How to Keep Holiday Cacti Blooming Longer
Holiday cacti โ€” Christmas cactus, Thanksgiving cactus, and even the lesser-known Easter varieties โ€” are the shining stars of December. When they burst into bloom, they feel like tiny fireworks in the middle of winter. But keeping those blooms going? That can feel like a holiday miracle. Good news: itโ€™s completely doable. With just a few small adjustments, you can enjoy flowers well past Christmasโ€ฆand sometimes even into February. Letโ€™s keep those blooms glowing! ๐ŸŽ„ ๐Ÿ. ๐†๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐“๐ก๐ž๐ฆ ๐’๐ญ๐ž๐š๐๐ฒ, ๐†๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฅ๐ž ๐‹๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ Holiday cacti love bright, indirect light โ€” think โ€œnear a window,โ€ not โ€œpressed against the glass.โ€ In December, sunlight is weak, so they wonโ€™t scorch, but drafts and cold glass can shock buds. ๐๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ญ๐ฌ: * A bright east- or north-facing window * A few feet back from a sunny south window * Near grow lights, but not directly under them ๐€๐ฏ๐จ๐ข๐: * Direct hot afternoon sun * Areas right next to exterior doors (cold blasts = dropped blooms) ๐Ÿ’ง ๐Ÿ. ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐†๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐จ๐œ๐ค๐ฌ ๐’๐œ๐ก๐ž๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ž Overwatering is the #1 bloom-killer. Underwatering is #2. When blooming, holiday cacti like soil that stays slightly moist โ€” not soggy, not bone-dry. ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ฐ๐ก๐ž๐ง: * The top 1โ€“2 inches feel dry * The pot feels noticeably lighter ๐“๐ข๐ฉ: If your home is heated and dry, check more often. If itโ€™s humid or cooler, extend the time between waterings. ๐Ÿงช 3. Avoid Temperature Swings Holiday cacti are dramaticโ€ฆ in the cutest way. If temps bounce around, theyโ€™ll drop buds out of protest. ๐ˆ๐๐ž๐š๐ฅ ๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ง๐ -๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐›๐ฅ๐จ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฌ: * 65โ€“75ยฐF during the day * 60โ€“65ยฐF at night ๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐š๐ฏ๐จ๐ข๐: * Heat vents blasting hot air * Fireplaces * Cold window drafts * Placing it on top of an appliance that gets warm Even a single cold gust or hot blast can cause a bloom dump. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ ๐Ÿ’. ๐๐จ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐‡๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ข๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ (๐“๐ก๐ž ๐’๐ž๐œ๐ซ๐ž๐ญ ๐–๐ž๐š๐ฉ๐จ๐ง!) Indoor heating dries out the air like crazy โ€” and blooming holiday cacti hate that. Easy ways to increase humidity: * Set the pot on a pebble tray filled with water * Group it with other plants * Run a nearby humidifier
