National Seed Swap Day (Last Saturday in January): Letโ€™s Trade Seeds, Stories, and โ€œOoo I Want That One!โ€ ๐ŸŒฑโœจ
National Seed Swap Day is celebrated on the last Saturday in January which is January 31, 2026.
And for us container gardeners? Seed swaps are ๐‘๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘“๐‘’๐‘๐‘ก because we can try new varieties without buying 27 packets for 6 pots. ๐Ÿ˜„
A seed swap isnโ€™t just about โ€œfree seedsโ€ (though yes please). Itโ€™s also about:
* discovering varieties youโ€™ve never seen in stores
* sharing what actually did well in real gardens (not just catalog photos)
* swapping growing tips along with the seeds
* keeping interesting heirlooms and regional favorites circulating
If youโ€™re participating in any kind of swap be it local, library, online, or โ€œPGS-styleโ€โ€”hereโ€™s what makes it easy and fair:
โœ…
Think โ€œsample sizesโ€:
20 seeds for small seeds (lettuce, basil, flowers)
10 seeds for larger seeds (beans, cucumbers, sunflowers)
โœ…
At minimum, include:
* plant name + variety
* year packed (freshness matters)
* any notes: โ€œgreat in containers,โ€ โ€œpartial shade,โ€ โ€œfast grower,โ€ etc.
๐๐จ๐ง๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ: โ€œdays to harvestโ€ or โ€œdeterminate tomatoโ€ if you know it.
If youโ€™re limited on space, these are great swap targets:
* ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐Ÿ๐ฒ ๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐ง๐ฌ (lettuce mixes, spinach, arugula)
* ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐›๐ฌ (basil varieties, dill, cilantro, lemon balm)
* ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ญ/๐๐ฐ๐š๐ซ๐Ÿ ๐ฏ๐ž๐ ๐ ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ (patio tomatoes, bush beans, mini peppers)
* ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ญ๐จ๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ (calendula, nasturtium, zinniaโ€”container-friendly joy)
* ๐ฆ๐ข๐œ๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐ง๐ฌ (radish, broccoli, mustard)
A lot of seed swaps encourage people to avoid invasive plants and to share responsibly. Local swaps (and conservation groups) often emphasize noninvasive choices and good labeling so folks donโ€™t accidentally spread problems.
If youโ€™re unsure about a seed, label it as a โ€œmysteryโ€ and skip swapping it (or ask first).
If we ever wanted to make this a community activity, here are a few simple formats:
Members post:
* what they have to share
* what they want
Then they DM to trade.
Everyone posts a wishlist (Top 5 seeds they want to try).
People reply with matches.
Encourage members to check local libraries. Many communities run seed libraries and swaps around this time of year.
If you joined a seed swap this year, what would you be most excited to trade for?
A) container-friendly tomatoes/peppers
B) greens + salad pot mixes
C) herbs (tea garden, anyone?)
D) flowers for pollinators
E) something totally unique โ€” tell us!
And bonus:
Share your ideas on a seed swap and we'll see if we can get one orgarnized for the community.
