Have you noticed it yet?
You waterโฆ
And two days later the soil feels dry again.
Or maybe the oppositeโฆ
Youโre still watering like itโs Januaryโฆ and suddenly things feel soggy.
Welcome to early spring transition mode.
As daylight increases, your plants shift even if theyโre still indoors.
And if we donโt shift with them?
Thatโs when overwatering (or underwatering) sneaks in.
Letโs break it down.

As days get longer:
* Photosynthesis increases
* Leaf production speeds up
* Roots become more active
* Soil dries out faster
Even if temperatures havenโt dramatically changed, light alone triggers growth momentum.
So if youโre watering on a rigid โevery 5 daysโ scheduleโฆ
Itโs time to switch back to observing instead of scheduling.
Plants donโt own calendars. They respond to conditions.

In January, growth is slower.
In March? Things wake up.
If you donโt adjust, plants may dry out faster than expected, especially under grow lights.
Dry stress right now can:
* Stall growth
* Cause leaf curl
* Slow root development

Hereโs the tricky one.
Some gardeners think:
โMore growth means more water!โ
But seedlings especially canโt sit in soggy soil while adjusting to stronger light.
Increased light speeds evaporation but cool nighttime temps can still keep soil damp below the surface.
Thatโs how root rot sneaks in.

Instead of following a schedule, try this:
โ Check soil moisture with your finger (1โ2 inches deep)
โ Lift containers - lighter pots need water
โ Water thoroughly, then allow proper drainage
โ Avoid constantly โtopping offโ small amounts daily
Deep watering + proper drying cycle = stronger roots.

This is a great time of year to use bottom watering if:
* Seedlings are well established
* You want to encourage deeper root growth
* Youโre trying to prevent fungus gnats
But donโt leave trays sitting in water too long.
20โ30 minutes is plenty.

Not soggy.
Not bone dry.
We want:
* Even moisture + strong root development + steady growth
* Because next weekโฆ weโll likely be talking about hardening off.
* And strong roots make that transition so much smoother.

Which one sounds more like you right now?
โ My soil dries too fast
โ My soil stays wet too long
โ It depends on the plant
