🧱 Day 5: How to Fix Compacted Soil (Without Repotting Everything)
Before you panic and start repotting every container…
Try this first:
• Gently loosen the top layer with a chopstick, fork, or wooden skewer.
• Add a small amount of fresh, airy potting mix to the top.
• Check that drainage holes are not blocked.
• Occasionally bottom water to encourage deeper root growth.
• If severely compacted, then consider repotting.
You don’t have to tear everything apart at the first sign of trouble.
Small adjustments can restore airflow and improve drainage quickly.

This week we learned:
• Soil should be gently firm not packed tight.
• Drainage depends on structure, not just holes.
• Roots need oxygen.
• Compaction is common and fixable.
Container gardening is often less about “doing more” and more about understanding what’s happening beneath the surface.
What’s one thing you learned this week about soil?
And be honest…
Are you still tempted to pack it like brown sugar?
