This position is a member of the City of Palm Springs Fire Department and performs fire fighting and emergency medical response activities to protect life and property; responds to a variety of fire and emergency and non-emergency calls for service; performs station and equipment maintenance; and performs a variety of other technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. All new hires will be placed on probation for a period of one year from the date of hire, during the probationary period the employee is an at-will employee. The Position: Under general supervision, responds to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, traffic accidents, rescue, and other emergency calls to protect life and property, participates in training, drill, and independent study activities: participates in the maintenance of fire apparatus, equipment, and facilities; performs various staff support assignments; and performs related work as assigned. SALARY & BENEFITS Annual Salary: First step Firefighter starting at $53,820.00 Annual Retirement: California Public Employees’ Retirement System Classic – 2% @ 50 or PEPRA – 2.7% @ 57. Clothing Allowance: $750 annually Summary of Duties: The Firefighter is responsible for firefighting entailing the combating, extinguishing, and preventing of fires and the saving of life and property. A Firefighter is responsible for rapidly and efficiently performing various duties under emergency conditionsfrequently involving considerable hazards, which may require strenuous exertion under handicaps like heat, smoke, and confined spaces. Depending on the nature of the emergency the Firefighter provides basic life support and performs extrication and rescue. This position requires interacting with patients, independently assessing, and treating medical emergencies, following treatment protocols, and documenting findings and events for the patient’s medical record. Work is often carried out under stressful conditions in the presence of contagious diseases, and environmental, chemical, or physical violence hazards. Firefighters are responsible for driving assigned apparatus to fire and emergency scenes, and operating pumps or other mechanical equipment as required. The work involves extensive training in performing firefighting and rescue activities. The Firefighter’s work includes routine duties in maintaining firefighting equipment, apparatus, and fire district property. The Firefighter will assist in the inspections of buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances. The Firefighter is responsible for carrying out the specific orders and directions as received from a higher-ranking officer in the normal course of maintenance duties and firefighting. Considerable independence of judgment and action is allowed in circumstances of extreme urgency where referral to a supervisor for instruction is not possible.
