Any advice on becoming a Fire Fighter Paramedic?
Hello everyone, I’ll soon be able to get into IFT and I was just wondering what the best path for becoming a Fire Fighter Paramedic is. I’ve been told to go through ambulance work into medical school and THEN go into Fire. I’m pretty sure that’s the easiest way, but I have an opportunity to get into Fire academy next year. I just don’t know where I’ll be by the time academy is over and if I can be with the department that would pay for it. I’m guessing I’m asking if it’s worth it to do academy while working in an ambulance or if it’s smarter to focus on ambulance work. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Welcome dude! That is a great question that everyone has! I plan to host some virtual workshops on here and have firefighters available to talk directly with you all. For now, I think that the best thing is to continue working in IFT and start networking. It’s honestly going to be dependent on your local area. California is different than other places and asking directly to the people who work in your area is going to give you the best idea. As for the fire academy I think you should also ask them directly their opinion. We have mentorship programs with our local fire departments in Sacramento. They pair you with a captain and they take you under their wing. I would see if that is available where you are. What city and state are you in? I could honestly talk forever about this. There are many ways to your dream job, pick one and move in that direction (experience is always good) and don’t be afraid to pivot when you find a more direct path. When I’m at my computer and can type more easily I’ll write some more -Ray

This is a great question. I have a podcast episode on this! Yay! https://open.spotify.com/episode/6kKK9ZNamnHYYtE9FgxdT3?si=dOpJgq2yQvWs3cyNYxzJ6w This should cover the state licensing process. As for jobs, Kelli is right you will need to google search and network. Some companies have hiring windows so it can be hard to find direct info from websites. What city and state are you looking to work in?I’ll help you look. -Ray
