THE POSITIONThe Milpitas Fire Department is seeking qualified individuals for the position of Firefighter (Lateral) and Firefighter/Paramedic (Lateral). THE COMMUNITY
Located at the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay, Milpitas is a progressive community that is an integral part of the Silicon Valley. Milpitas is at the heart of Silicon Valley and is often called the “Crossroads of Silicon Valley” with most of its 13.63 square miles of land situated between two major freeways (I-880 and I-680), State Route 237, and a County expressway. With existing light rail and BART extension opening in 2020, the transit hub adjacent to the Great Mall facilitated high density transit-oriented development with over 2,100 units being built. There are approximately 1,790 acres, or 2.9 square miles designated for various industrial uses.
An additional 350 acres are dedicated to regional and community retail centers supporting 3.5 million square feet of commercial shops. The Great Mall of the Bay Area is the largest enclosed mall in Northern California, with approximately 1.1 million square feet of leasable space for retail and entertainment operations. Several local shopping centers service regional needs including Asian-oriented retail and services. The City provides a multitude of outstanding recreational opportunities, including aquatics, cultural arts and theater, sports leagues and activities, youth and senior programming and activities.
THE CITY GOVERNMENT
Incorporated in 1954, the City of Milpitas is a bustling general-law city supervised by a council-manager form of government. Milpitas is a full-service city that includes Police, Fire, and a water utility and sewer utility. The Council makes planning and policy decisions for residents, and oversees the City’s $253.2 million budget. Issues currently challenging the City include development, quality of life, and traffic.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are limited to, the following:
- Respond to and perform skilled tasks at the scene of emergency calls for assistance to include fire, medical assistance, basic life support capability, rescues, heavy rescues, extrications, hazard identification, hazardous materials incidents, public assistance and service.
- Provide patient/victim assessment quickly and thoroughly; initiate and apply appropriate medical treatment including rescue, first aid and advanced life support according to standard and accepted protocol and the latest technology available.
- Participate as a team member of firefighter company responding to alarms; connect and lay hose lines; enter burning areas of buildings with hose lines; assist in operating nozzles and directing a stream of water on fire; carry and operate a variety of firefighting equipment; raise, lower, and climb ladders; forcibly enter buildings when necessary.
- Participate in proficiency training and study to develop, maintain, and expand job skills; study Fire Department rules and regulations and attend drills, exercise, and staff conferences.
- Participate in community relations activities and public education class and demonstrations.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
- One (1) year of full-time continuous professional firefighting experience employed as Firefighter with a public agency or special district. Successful completion of the probationary period as a Firefighter.
Education:
- Equivalent to the successful completion of the twelfth grade. Some college-level fire science coursework is desirable.
License or Certificates:
- Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid appropriate State Driver's License and Firefighter Endorsement if appropriate.
- Possession of and ability to maintain a current CPR certification from the American Heart Association.
Firefighter (Lateral):
- Possession of and ability to maintain a current license as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic with the State of California or possession of National Registry-EMT Certification and ability to obtain and maintain certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-EMT with the State of California within sixty days of appointment to this job classification.
- Ability to obtain an Emergency Medical Technician-EMT Accreditation from the County of Santa Clara within sixty days of appointment to this job classification.
- California State Fire Marshal certifications in Technical Rescue Operations, Hazardous Materials Technician, and Wildland firefighting are highly desirable.
Firefighter/Paramedic (Lateral):
- Possession of and ability to maintain a current license as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic with the State of California or possession of National Registry Paramedic Certification and ability to obtain and maintain certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic with the State of California within sixty days of appointment to this job classification.
- Ability to obtain an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Accreditation from the County of Santa Clara within sixty days of appointment to this job classification.

Supplemental Information
Screening and Selection ProcessCandidates that meet the minimum qualifications and pass a subject matter expert review will be invited to an Oral Board Interview the week of July 17 - 21, 2023. Those that pass the Oral Board Interview will be invited to participate in an EMS competency assessment and Chief’s Interview the week of July 24 – 28, 2023.
