The Future of AI?
Sabine Hoffessenfelder argues that the future of AI is much bleaker than most people think. This is a very interesting and, I think, important prospective which I think everyone needs to consider. Enjoy!
Audio Illusions--Sounds that people seem to hear but that aren't really there.
Just as the brain can be tricked into seeing things that don't actually exist (optical illusions) so too can the brain tricked in to hearing sounds that don't really exist (audio illusions). I've had a long interest in the field and even published an article on the subject. But this is the first article I've found on the topic to be published in Scientific American's The Amateur Scientist department. It's yet another gem from Jearl Walker and it shows how one can easily create bizarre audio illusions using a simple bell. This is great project for any mad scientist who want's to explore how the human brain processes (and often miss-processes) information in real time. It's a great science project for the younger members of our community. Here's the link: People Listening to a Bell Can Perceive Sounds the Bell Does Not Really Make Enjoy!
