Empathy
Self-esteem says "I am valued." Narcissism says "I am superior."
The difference is empathy. Harvard psychologist Dr. Craig Malkin and Dr. Daniel Siegel call it the ability to tune into another person's experience.
Try this:
• Pause and ask, "What do you think they felt?"
• Narrate feelings you see: "Look at his face, he seems disappointed."
• Model it in your own apology: "I spoke sharply, that wasn't kind."
Children who practice noticing others don't need constant admiration to feel secure.
