Earn to Eat

“If anyone does not want to work, neither let him eat.” — 2 Thessalonians 3:10

Paul was addressing Christians who were refusing to work while expecting others to support them. The surrounding verses show that he was encouraging a responsible, orderly way of life.

A helpful companion scripture is 2 Thessalonians 3:12, where Paul urges such ones “to work quietly and eat food they themselves earn.”

So the principle is not simply “everyone must have a job.” It is that a person should willingly contribute and take responsibility rather than deliberately living off the efforts of others.

It’s like a household where everyone is capable of carrying part of the load: if someone refuses to help but still expects everyone else to provide for them, the arrangement becomes unfair.
