Every summer, I read hundreds of GCSE English papers.
One thing surprises me every single year.
It isn't that students don't know enough.
It's that they often don't show what they know.
They identify language techniques but don't explain them.
They know quotations but don't answer the question.
They understand the text but don't structure their essays clearly.
The difference between a Grade 5 and a Grade 8 is often how ideas are communicated, not how much knowledge a student has.
That's exactly why our lessons focus on developing writing skills, not simply memorising content.
