Welcome to Enginerd Studios on Skool
If you’re here, you’re serious about improving your recordings and your mixes. My name is Scott Baber. I’m a professional audio engineer and co-founder of Somni Studios in Bend, Oregon. For over 10 years, I’ve worked in recording, mixing, ADR, voiceover, podcasts, and live sound. I’ve collaborated on projects connected to companies like Disney, MGM, and 20th Century Fox — primarily on the engineering side. My background is rooted in: - 10+ years running professional studio sessions - Hybrid analog + digital workflows - Working with indie bands, singer-songwriters, and national touring acts - Classical and jazz training (20+ years as a musician) 🔹🔹🔹Why This Community Exists🔹🔹🔹 There’s a gap between: - Watching random YouTube tutorials - And actually understanding how to make your recordings translate This community is designed to close that gap. 🔹🔹🔹The Goal🔹🔹🔹 To help beginner and intermediate engineers: - Record cleaner tracks at home - Make confident mix decisions - Understand why something works — not just copy presets - Build systems that scale with your skill level 🔹🔹🔹This isn’t about hype, secret sauce, or plugin collecting.🔹🔹🔹 It’s about: - Signal flow - Intentional decisions - Repeatable processes - Real-world application 🔹🔹🔹What You Can Expect🔹🔹🔹 - Direct feedback - Clear explanations - Structured thinking - Practical workflows used in real sessions If you post a mix, you’ll get honest feedback. If you’re stuck on a technical issue, I'll troubleshoot it. If you’re building a home studio, I'll make sure you invest in the right areas first. 🔹🔹🔹How to Get the Most Out of This🔹🔹🔹 Start by introducing yourself below: - What DAW are you using? - What genres are you working on? - Biggest struggle right now? Be specific. The more context you give, the better the guidance. Welcome to Enginerd Studio. Let’s build your engineering skills the right way.

Submit Your Mix. Get Real Feedback.
This is where you post your mixes for review. The format is simple: Band / Artist Name – Song Title – Specific Concerns Be clear about what you want feedback on. Low end translation? Vocal balance? Harshness? Depth? If you don’t tell me what you’re unsure about, I’ll decide for you. Submissions must be a stereo bounce. Full sessions are reserved for paid members. Reviews will be public. I’ll record breakdowns weekly and post them here. I’ll also host additional live review sessions for paid members where we can go deeper. Every submission will be reviewed. First come, first served. There are a few rules. No AI-generated songs. The music must be written and created by a human. And post something that represents your best effort. This isn’t about perfection, but it should be intentional work. Expect direct feedback. Not harsh. Not sugarcoated. Clear, actionable notes you can apply immediately. If you’re serious about improving, this channel will move you forward quickly.

Mixing Isn’t Magic. It’s Decisions.
This channel is where we break mixing down into practical, repeatable decisions. You’ll see two types of posts here. First: foundational principles. Gain staging. EQ moves that solve real problems. Compression that supports a performance instead of flattening it. Stereo width that holds up in mono. The fundamentals that make everything else easier. Second: real-world moves. Step-by-step breakdowns. Why something felt off. What changed. What didn’t. When to push harder. When to leave it alone. I’ll share examples pulled from real sessions when possible (cleaned up and client-safe), along with controlled examples built specifically to demonstrate certain concepts clearly. This won’t be preset-driven mixing. It won’t be about chasing plugins. It will be about developing judgment. Most examples will lean indie, rock, and folk because that’s where I spend most of my time — but the principles apply anywhere. We’ll also run mix challenges in here. Same multitracks. Different decisions. You’ll hear how small choices compound. If you’re new, this will help you understand what actually matters. If you’re intermediate, this will sharpen your instincts and speed up your workflow.

Great Drum Sounds Start Before You Hit Record
This channel is dedicated to recording drums the right way. Full kits. Real rooms. Real players. We’ll cover everything from one-mic setups to 16+ mic sessions. Minimalist approaches. Full production setups. When more mics help — and when they just create phase problems. The core philosophy here: Source > Drummer > Mic placement / setup > Gear If the kit sounds bad in the room, the recording will reflect that. Tuning, head choice, damping, cymbal selection, and player dynamics matter more than your mic locker. We’ll break down: Drum prep and tuning Room choice and mic placement strategies Kick, snare, tom, overhead, and room mic approaches Phase alignment and polarity Editing and tightening techniques Sample reinforcement (not replacement) when needed Programming isn’t the focus here, but we’ll touch on it if it serves the conversation. You’ll see comparisons between different mic counts, different rooms, and different philosophies. The goal isn’t complexity. It’s control. If you can record drums well, everything else gets easier.
Flavio Rubi - in the morning
Im having trouble controlling the harshness in this mix. I used a pulteq EQ to add warmth & color to the vocal and i really like it but i think it adds a bit too much brightness. I would also appreciate some guidance adjusting the reverb/delay parameters
