Persuasion Tactics Won't Save Your Copy, But This Will
Good evening copy academy :)
Today, I want to talk about something that I don't really see a lot of marketers and copywriters focusing on or teaching?
And it really surprises me because it's the one part of any marketing to get right if you want to get results...
I know this because I lacked this when I was first marketing for my clients.
But anyways, I'm going to explain what I'm talking about so read on if you want to know how.
Whenever most copywriters are writing any piece of copy, whether that be an email, an ad, a vsl, a sales page etc they will focus on persuasion and being attention grabbing.
because that's the way we're all taught, right?
The "foundation" of copywriting is persuasive words. Obsessing over these little persuasive words and phrases and tactics.
This was what I thought made marketing that generates results.
Until I learnt that I really lacked knowledge on a pivotal step which I needed to figure out FIRST before I started worrying about all of that.
Yes persuasion tactics work, but they are powerless if you're not doing this well enough.
From what I've been learning these past few months and working with multiple clients,
it was the root of one, why I got stuck when writing, and two, why my copy didn't convert for clients in the beginning.
And after learning how to do this the right way, I don't want you to lack this in your copy because It's crucial if you want to get results for your clients!
It's having deep knowledge on the specific audience that you're writing too.
BUT, do you know the audience your writing to well enough?
One particular moment where this really hit for me was the first time I worked with one of my clients (still working with today)
And I was writing their ads, a full blown VSL, and full end to end funnel.
We launched, and it did okay, but not as-well as expected sadly.
And then, I re-did everything, did way more research on the specific audience with a specially made A.I prompt that went really deep on the audience,
And we were bringing in the exact results my clients wanted, (which was sales calls with specific people.)
Now I know you already know it's important to understand an audience, but that's only one part of this puzzle. In fact, that's not what this is about
Really think about it for a sec,
do you know HOW to understand an audience?
Like do you understand the specific person you're talking to deep enough?
To a granular DEEP detail?
Because for me, what I used to do (if you can relate to this)
I would go to ai and just simply ask it "give me an audience profile about xyz person."
But that "research" I was doing, wasn't deep enough to be able to write copy that was actually gonna stick.
Turns out, that's only scratching the surface...
For any piece of copy to stick, it has to connect. Connect DEEPLY.
And for it to connect deeply, it has to sound like it's specifically written for THEM.
Because when it sounds like it's specifically written for them, they'll want to read more, click, and convert.
But the thing is, there's more to it than just the gender, the age, the problem, the pain, and the solution, like I said that's barely scratching the surface.
Because honestly, what type of copywriter do you think will write better copy if they were writing to the same audience? Surface level research, or granular?
We recently did a 2hr 30min call in full stack marketing about market research, where I was teaching how to deeply understand their clients specific audience using the exact same A.I prompt I used to take my clients marketing from doing mediocre results, to getting way better conversions.
So two major things I'm giving you here today:
  • Do DEEPER research on the audience you're writing for.
  • Don't just find out "who" are your writing for,
  • research deeper details about the "who"
Most copywriters think about, "Who am I writing for" and not, "What is this person thinking and feeling deeply?"
Write these down, and do some digging:
  • Know the specific audience better than they know themselves,
  • know the audience better than the client knows about their audience
  • Find out every aspect of them, more than just the general "problem and pain" or solution,
  • What keeps them up at night? What's holding them back?
And to make this way easier for you to find out (since your not a dictionary of course) leverage A.I to do it for you
Because Ai has more data and information than you could ever dream of on any audience that you want to write for.
Until you know this well enough, you should not be trying to find the next new persuasion tactics, or make a list of attention grabbing wording, power words, and all that nonsense.
Because if you can understand the audience deeply, and leverage A.I the right way to do it for you,
your copy will not only sound way better than other copywriters,
but it will connect way more with the audience your writing to.
And when it connects deeper with the specific audience, it will stick better.
And when it sticks, it converts.
Conversions that your clients will LOVE.
I hope this was valuable to you!
I'm going to get back to editting a VSL for one of my clients!
As always, comments and questions are welcomed!
Much love,
Alicia
