🧠 YOU'RE DANCING TO THE COUNTS. NOT THE MUSIC.
There's a difference — and it shows on camera. When a trainee is counting ("5, 6, 7, 8..."), their movement becomes mechanical. Every beat gets equal weight. Every transition is the same size. But the music doesn't work that way. Some beats are heavy. Some are whispered. Some carry the whole emotional load of the track. Musicality is the skill of responding to THAT — not to the count. ➤ The "Accent" Exercise: 1. Pick any 16-count section of a song you're learning 2. Listen 3x without moving — just identify: where is the heaviest hit? The softest? 3. Now mark those moments physically. A heavy hit = bigger, sharper movement. A soft moment = smaller, slower. 4. The count stays the same. The WEIGHT changes. Most trainees are technically on time but musically absent. You can be both on time AND expressive. That's the goal. Film this version vs. your original.
